Overview
Nigeria has shown increased political will in combatting maritime insecurity in the Gulf of Guinea, as the government aims to strengthen the country’s blue economy and develop Nigeria as a maritime hub for West and Central Africa. However, commercial operators report ambiguities surrounding the region’s prevailing security model of embarked coastal state personnel on commercial vessels, which is formally prohibited in Nigeria’s territorial waters. Greater transparency and a standardization of policies across the region, together with further domestic capacity-building, are still required. Collaboration between the government and the private sector will be crucial in unlocking the country’s maritime potential.
At this event, the speakers will respond to concerns regarding Nigeria’s measures and capacity to ensure a safe maritime operating environment in the Gulf of Guinea. They will highlight recent steps the government has taken to enhance Nigeria’s security capabilities, and examine the importance of a holistic approach in tackling the root causes of maritime insecurity
