INCRA Commends Sen Andrew Uchendu, And Others For Standing Up In Defence Of Democracy In Nigeria.
The Inter-ethnic Network for Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, INCRA, a foremost media group in Rivers State, hails Chief Senator Andrew Igbonule Uchendu, OON, and his colleagues for upholding and defending the Supremacy of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the floor of the Senate. Statement released by Mr Ohaka Nduka Skala who is Member of INCRA Interim Management Team on behalf of the group reads :
"A couple of days ago, a rather bizarre and politically engineered scene played out on the floor of the Nigerian Senate during one of its plenary. The Senate had sought to upturn a section of the Constitution that confers power on INEC to fix the date of elections in Nigeria. However, this morbid undemocratic disposition of the Senate did not go down well with Sen. Andrew and other of his colleagues who staged a historic and democratic walkout in protest of what was considered a rape on Nigeria's democracy.
It is trite knowledge, that any position, report, recommendation or law that is in conflict or inconsistent with the provisions of the Constitution, such position, report, recommendation or law shall to the extent of its inconsistency become void. Section 132 of the Constitution explicitly and without ambiguity empowers INEC to appoint a date for elections into the office of the President, it is therefore, grossly undemocratic for the Senate to seek to overturn the powers and responsibility of INEC merely on the strength of a Conference Committee Report.
We commend Chief Sen. Andrew and his colleagues who summoned the courage to resist an attempt to undermine the provisions of the Constitution. This is not about Rivers East Senatorial District, it is not even about Rivers State but the position of majority of Nigerians whose voices cannot be heard. Sen. Andrew has proven to be one of the loudest voices in the Senate advocating the interest of the masses and upholding democratic principles and usages.
We urge him to continue with his altruistic and people-oriented legislation and his unrelenting quest for the complete implementation of democratic tenets in Nigeria. Sen. Andrew and his colleagues are indeed the true face of democracy in Nigeria".
