Nigeria and Denmark are set to continue to build on their bilateral relationship by increasing trade and investment between the two nations for mutual economic benefit by harnessing more opportunities in the maritime sector of both countries.

This was made known by the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Dr. Dakuku Peterside and The Danish Ambassador to Nigeria Mr. Jesper Kamp when the latter paid a courtesy visit to the Management at the NIMASA headquarters in Lagos.

While welcoming the Ambassador, Dr. Dakuku stated that Nigeria and Denmark have a lot in common and there was the need to continuously seek avenues of shoring up investment especially taking into consideration that Nigeria is the biggest market in Africa.

According to Dakuku “Nigeria and Demark have a lot to do in shoring up maritime investment in Africa. Without doubt Nigeria is the biggest market on the continent because 90% of the goods heading to Africa comes to Nigeria and so Denmark will benefit a lot in investing in the biggest market on the continent”, he said.

Speaking on security in the gulf of guinea, the NIMASA DG said that the Agency is tackling issues relating to piracy and other maritime crimes headlong. He said that aside sponsoring an anti-piracy bill which will ensure prosecution of perpetrators of criminals in the Nigerian maritime domain, NIMASA is also coming up with a more robust enforcement drive that curb illegalities in the domain.

He opined that the importance of the Gulf of Guinea to the global maritime trade makes it imperative for all nations to cooperate in order to ensure security in the region. He also informed that NIMASA is planning a global maritime summit that will bring stakeholders together to brainstorm on tackling piracy in the domain.

“ We are planning a global maritime summit where we will gather all a maritime stakeholders across the globe to brainstorm on the issue of piracy in the gulf of guinea with a view to fashioning out a global solution to the menace”.

In his remarks Ambassador Jasper Kamp said that the Danish government is well aware of Nigeria’s strategic importance to maritime trade which is one of the mainstays of the Danish economy. He said development of trade and investments through maritime was one of the major discussions he had with President Muhammadu Buhari when he met with him recently.

He said that Denmark has a global maritime policy strategy document for 2019-2022 which has a special focus on security in the Gulf of Guinea and that the country will also look towards assisting Nigeria in capacity building for the maritime sector through training of seafarers and creating the much needed seatime.

It would be noted that NIMASA under the leadership of Dr. Dakuku Peterside has continuously championed collaborative efforts to grow maritime in the entire African region working with global partners.
