-Warns Against Environmental Pollution
-Calls For Proper Hygiene and Waste Management.
The Federal Commissioner, Public Complaints Commission Hon. Marshall Israel in company of his team of investigators paid a working visit to The Trans-Amadi Abattoir in Obio-Apko LGA of Rivers State. The essence of the visit was to investigate a Complaints lodged against the Abattoir in relation to Environmental Pollution, Poor Waste Management, interact with customers and dealers at the Abattoir.
The People's Commissioner was recieved by the Chairman of National Butchers Union Of Nigeria, Rivers State Chapter Mr. Musa Babba Ahmed and his executive. The Chairman thanked the People's Commissioner for coming to see the reality on ground instead of sitting in office and believe the Complainant.
In his Words "We appreciate Allah for bringing you safely to our Abattoir. This Slaughter has been in existence since 1979 and we have been working with every department of government including Ministries of Health, Environment and Agriculture. The Special Adviser to The Governor On Pollution always visit here for inspection. Our livestocks are always inspected by veterinary Experts before we slaughter them. We are not perfect but we strive to maintain good hygiene and waste management and I assure you that our standard is not below the acceptable minimum in this industry.
While on inspection of the facilities at the Abattoir, the PCC Boss urged them to maintain high level of hygiene and proper Waste Management.
"I am here for an On-the-Spot Investigation. You are not on trial nor under arrest by PCC but as a responsible and responsive agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria, our interest is to protect and defend the Public without biasness".
"Our Modus operandi is to respond timely when we receive Complaints or petition. we do not spare time to act. While I commend you for the maintenance of good hygiene and Waste Management, I think you need to do More because your industry services greater population of the State. Majority of the residents consume your product".
"Nobody is witch-hunting you. This is part of our oversight function. I so commend the petitioner as he has done the society greater good by reporting what is perceived anomaly in his judgement. You people can go about your businesses and not think otherwise. We are all working for a better Rivers State".
"I and my team have moved round the premises. I have seen workers cleaning the Abattoir and flushing out the waste waters. I have seen the livestock including cows and I think they are healthy. I have equally seen the Vetrenary Doctor of the abattoir, Dr Ogolo Bukola, who assured me that all livestock here passes through proper vaccination while dead and infected ones are usually taken away and buried in a designated location. My interest is to ensure that Rivers People and customers are not affected by your operations. You are well organized and I urge you to continue in this pace. I will prepare my report and send to appropriate authorities" PCC Boss said
