There Is Real Progress Being Made On The Ground — US Consulate General on Ogoni Cleanup.
Today, Mr. Shashank K. Iyer, Political Officer, US Consulate General, US Embassy, Nigeria, went on an inspection tour of HYPREP Project Sites to see the progress of the Ogoni Cleanup and assess the performance of HYPREP. After the inspection, Mr. Shashank said:
"Progress is being made. We can say that more could've been done but this is how government works. It's good to see that there is real progress being made on the ground. Things can sometimes move slowly but as long as it's being moved forward, that's important to us".
The Consulate General paid a courtesy visit to the palace of Chief Bebe Okpabi, paramount ruler of Ogale community, Eleme LGA, who said to him: "I can say to you without bias as the most affected that there is progress."
Isisioken in Ogale, Eleme, was the place where the UNEP Report observed that groundwater was contaminated with Benzene to a concentration 900 times above WHO standards. It's good to hear the head of this community testifying to the progress of the Cleanup. The team also visited lots 17, 19 and 20 in Korokoro and Botem communities, Tai LGA.
