Spurred by the myriad of complaints from members of the public over undue deductions, surchages, failed transactions, unwarranted debits and related issues by commercial Banks, the Commissioner of Public Complaints Commission, PCC, in Rivers State, Hon. Marshall Isreal paid a working visit to the Branch Controller, Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr. Alaka Kazeem, to seek partnership with the Central Bank in order to provide lasting solutions to the recurrent issues of infractions by  commercial Banks against members of the public.

Hon. Israel who spoke dispassionately about the frequent complaints he had been receiving from the public over the persistent incidents of unjustified debits and excessive charges associated with banking services, urged the CBN in Rivers State to forge an effective partnership with the PCC which will accord both the CBN and the PCC a platform to collaborate effectively and exchange ideas geared towards addressing the issues, finding solutions to it and providing relief to affected members of the public.

According to the PCC Commissioner, Hon. Isreal, this issue is fast becoming a social menace and there is urgent need to nip it in the bud and restore the confidence of the public in their financial institutions.

"We are here to seek means of collaborating with your institution because we understand that our first port of call in resolving these issues for which we have received several complaints on, is to interphase with the CBN. The PCC is very passionate about discharging it's statutory responsibilities and ensuring that members of the public get the needed relief they seek when they come to us. It is our committment to the public to ensure that their complaints are adequately addressed that has neccesitated this visit", he stated.

Hon. Isreal pointed out the need for expedited actions towards addressing these anomalies in the banking system adding that commercial Banks ought to demonstrate a high level transparency, credibility and trustworthiness in their dealings with the public so as not to give them a term of opprobrium.

In response to the Honourable Commissioner, the Branch Controller, lauded the zest and spirited efforts of  Hon. Isreal towards the issues of unexplained surchages, delayed or non-reversal of undelivered transactions, high interest rates on loans and others.

"I am very impressed with your presentation and the subject of the presentation. I am happy to hear that we can actually walk up to the PCC and get justice free of charge. We will pass the message to our staff and the general public. One way we can support your quest is to invite you to our monthly meetings with bank heads where you can interact with stakeholders in the banking industry and further address these challenges.

"Although, we already have a mechanism for resolving complaints related to financial transactions through our Information and Client Services Unit, however, we are glad to have you as it will enhance what we are already doing. I can assure you that we are already in partnership. Before now, we we're not aware of the PCC. We really appreciate your visit as it has made us aware of your activities", he concluded.

The PCC is poised to ensure that all complaints it receives from the members of the public are given sufficient attention and where necessary, resolved completely in line with its obligations.
